The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug Dominates Box Office in Opening Weekend

Premiere Of Warner Bros' "The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug" - Red Carpet

The second installment of ‘The Hobbit’ hit theaters in the wee hours of the morning last Friday. The much anticipated ‘The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug’ put up strong numbers at the box office, but did they meet expectations?

‘Smaug’ dominated its competitors, but fell short of heavy expectations made by analysts. The movie opened to the tune of $73.7 million. It’s nearest competitor was Disney’s ‘Frozen’ which has been steady at $22.2 million. Coming in at third, one of the 8th wonders of the world ‘Tyler Perry’s a Madea’ Christmas at $16 million. We’re till yet to meet anyone who’s gone to those movies.

The $73.7 million opening fell short of the $75 million projection, but still came in second of all the ‘Lord of the Rings’ movies. The original ‘Hobbit’ movie opened at $84.6 million and ‘The Lord of the Ring: Return of the King’ opened up at $72.6 million. There’s no panic whatsoever by any of the people associated with the film. The movie is still expected to gross well over $600 million worldwide. It also received strong reviews and an approval rating by over 88% of movie-goers.

People are going to speculate trouble for the ‘The Hobbit’ series with a slightly short opening, but there’s absolutely no reason to look to deeply into this. The movies are still as popular as ever.
